English Springer Spaniels are intelligent dogs who catch on to new things easily. The Springer Spaniel is an ideal dog for country or city life. Springers are people pleasers. They love to be around people, and they are energetic, loving companions. They are energetic and playful animals, and many owners find humor in their play. With proper training the can excel in agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are great with children and are an excellent pick for families. Of course as with any dog breed, children should always be supervised to make sure they are not antagonizing the dog.
The Springer brand of dogs are generally friendly and always looking to make their owners happy. There are people who use the sweet temperament of a Golden Retriever to describe the Springer’s personality. They are happy to just be with their family even if that means just lying around the house. As long as they are allowed to people with people, they are flexible and acclimate easily to different activity levels. As a breeder we have raised many puppies and we can personally definitely testify to their high levels of affection!
As a breed, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting dog, and can weigh anywhere from 35-55 pounds at adulthood. They are generally very strong dogs that live anywhere between ten and fourteen years. Springers which are field bred have shorter hair and are generally more active than the show type Springers. All Springers have their tails docked shortly after birth, but the length of the tail differs between two “lifestyles.” The tails are docked shorter for Springers who are shown, whereas the working, field-bred Springers have longer tails so as to be an efficient signal for hunting.
A purebred English Springer Spaniel has a coat color of either liver and white or black and white. The tri-color coloration of black, liver, and white, is quite rare and will usually occur when the sire and dam are both tri-color. These are easily recognised by the white flash that runs down the middle of their faces.
If you need a good hunting dog, with plenty of energy, who is ready to sniff out some ‘game’, English Springer Spaniels are the breed for you. Springers love the water and would enjoy spending the entire day outside with their owners as they are not especially affected by weather. Because they are an old breed, they have been a favorite canine for many years. These dogs are the oldest but best hunting breed around.
So I hope you can see why we think Springers are a wonderful fit for many different situations, lifestyles, and families. We have seen how easily these adoring animals are accepted as a part of any family.
